Plugins let you add new features to your WordPress site — from contact forms to SEO tools to online stores. Here's how to find, install, and manage them safely.
Finding Plugins in Your Dashboard #
- Log into your WordPress admin dashboard.
- In the left-hand menu, click Plugins, then Add New Plugin.
- Use the search bar to search by keyword, plugin name, or feature (e.g., "SEO" or "contact form").
Installing From WordPress.org #
- Browse the search results and read plugin descriptions, ratings, and number of active installs.
- Click Install Now next to the plugin you want.
- After installation, click Activate.
Uploading a Plugin Zip File #
If you've purchased a premium plugin, you'll have a .zip file:
- From the Add New Plugin screen, click Upload Plugin at the top.
- Click Choose File, select the .zip file, and click Install Now.
- Click Activate Plugin.
Checking for Conflicts #
If two plugins conflict, you may see a white screen, broken layout, or error message after activation:
- Deactivate the plugin you just installed by going to Plugins > Installed Plugins and clicking Deactivate underneath it.
- Confirm your site returns to normal.
- Contact the plugin developer for compatibility guidance, or search for an alternative.
Keeping Plugins Updated #
Outdated plugins are one of the most common sources of security vulnerabilities:
- Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Any plugin with an update available will show an "update available" notice with an Update Now link.
- Use the checkbox at the top to select multiple plugins and bulk update them at once.
Log in at least once a week to check for and apply plugin updates.
