How to Create Your First Page or Post in WordPress

Adding content to your WordPress site starts with understanding two basic building blocks: Pages and Posts.

Pages vs. Posts: What’s the Difference? #

Pages are meant for static, standalone content that doesn’t change often — things like your Home page, About page, Services page, or Contact page. Pages aren’t organized by date and typically don’t appear in a blog feed.

Posts are meant for time-based content, like blog articles or news updates. Posts are displayed in reverse chronological order on your blog page and can be organized using categories and tags.

If you’re building your core business site, you’ll mostly work with Pages. If you’re running a blog or publishing regular updates, you’ll use Posts.

Creating a New Page #

1. Log into your WordPress admin dashboard.
2. In the left-hand menu, click Pages, then Add New Page.
3. Click the title field at the top and type your page title (for example, “About Us”).
4. Click into the content area below and add your content using the block editor — click the + icon to add blocks like paragraphs, images, headings, or buttons.

Creating a New Post #

1. In the left-hand menu, click Posts, then Add New Post.
2. Add your title and write your content the same way as a page.
3. On the right-hand sidebar, assign categories and tags to help organize your post.

Publishing vs. Saving as a Draft #

• Click Save Draft if you’re not ready to make it public yet.
• Click Publish (and confirm by clicking Publish again in the pop-up) to make it live immediately.
• Click the dropdown arrow next to Publish to schedule a post for a future date and time.

Setting a Page as Your Homepage #

By default, WordPress may show your latest blog posts on the homepage. To use a specific page as your homepage:

1. In the left-hand menu, go to Settings, then Reading.
2. Under “Your homepage displays,” select A static page.
3. Choose which page should serve as your Homepage.
4. Click Save Changes.
