How to Install a WordPress Theme

Your WordPress theme controls the overall look and layout of your website. Whether you want a free design from WordPress.org or a premium theme you purchased elsewhere, installing it is simple.

Finding Themes in Your WordPress Dashboard #

1. Log into your WordPress admin dashboard (yourdomain.com/wp-admin).
2. In the left-hand menu, hover over Appearance and click Themes.
3. Here you'll see all themes currently installed, with your active theme highlighted at the top.

Installing a Free Theme From WordPress.org #

1. From the Themes screen, click Add New Theme.
2. Use the search bar to look for a theme by name or keyword (e.g., "business" or "portfolio").
3. Hover over any theme thumbnail and click Install.
4. Once installation finishes, click Activate to make it your live site's theme.

Uploading a Premium Theme #

If you purchased a theme from a marketplace like ThemeForest, you'll receive a .zip file:

1. From the Themes screen, click Add New Theme, then click Upload Theme.
2. Click Choose File, select the theme .zip file, and click Install Now.
3. Once the upload finishes, click Activate.

Activating a Theme #

Activating a theme instantly applies it to your live website. Before activating on a live business site, use the Live Preview option to check how your content looks first.

What to Do If a Theme Breaks Your Site #

1. Log into the File Manager through Your Apex Managed Panel, or connect via SFTP.
2. Navigate to wp-content/themes/.
3. Rename the folder of the problematic theme (add "-broken" to the end). This forces WordPress to fall back to a default theme.
4. Log back into your WordPress dashboard to confirm the site is accessible again.

Keep a default WordPress theme (like Twenty Twenty-Four) installed at all times as a safety net.
